ABOUT OUR PROGRAM:
Students will meet for 1.5 hours, twice a week. The program will be a small group instruction with 6-8 students per teacher. Schedule will be developed to accommodate the greatest number of applicants.
During the sessions, we will provide students with hands-on activities to deepen their understanding of grade level concepts and help them develop problem-solving skills. Students will also have time to ask questions about homework.
WIT ACADEMY AFTER SCHOOL SUPPORT
Upper Elementary Course
The Upper Elementary Program will provide instruction with hands-on activities to help 3rd- 5th-grade students develop the skills which are necessary for success in elementary math:
Fluency with addition and subtraction
Understanding of multiplication and division
Strategies for multiplication and division of multi-digit numbers
Understanding of fractions and operations with fractions
Introduction to Geometry
High School geometry builds on concepts that were taught in middle school (e.g. dilation, rotation, and translation of shapes on the coordinate plane.) We will review these middle school concepts. We will also introduce important concepts and theorems that are pivotal to success in geometry so students will have a running start in their high school class. Students will :
learn how to use a compass to construct congruent segments, angles, and triangles.
review dilation, rotation, and translation of shapes on the coordinate plan
begin learning to use definitions and deductive reasoning to prove congruence
Middle School Course
The Middle School Program teaches students to develop algebraic thinking and proportional reasoning skills by using physical objects, pictures, and diagrams to solve problems. Students will learn to:
Model and solve ratio and rate problems
Connect their understanding of multiplication and and division to ratios, rates, and fractions
Write and solve algebraic equations based on word problems and physical situations.
The Algebra Program further develops algebraic thinking. Students will:
Solve word problems using physical and graphical models.
Model real life situations using charts, graphs, and equations.
Use algebra tiles to model abstract concepts such as factoring.
